If I’ve been missing the past few months, it’s because I’ve been busy making some much needed improvements on my life.
For the past two years I’ve been struggling a lot in my professional life. My first “real” job was incredibly stressful, had me working 10 hour days, skipping lunch breaks, and making little in the way of money. I loved the people I worked with, but I was profoundly unhappy. My next job was the polar opposite, but I still found the company culture not quite the right fit for me.
So, in an effort to find some fulfillment in my life, I started taking a graphic design class at Parsons/The New School, and loved every second of it. I realize now what I missed the most in my last two jobs was the opportunity to be creative, be challenged, and to problem solve without fear of failure. At the time, I thought about quitting my day job in order to focus more on graphic design, because it was the only thing I was really excited about.
As luck would have it, in December a job at my experience level and in my “field” opened up at Quirk Books, a publishing company that I’ve long admired (for those of you who don’t know, they publish Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Horrorstor, and a bunch of other awesome titles).
When I saw the listing, I’d only been in my job for around 9 months. The job was in Philadelphia, and I was in Jersey City (just outside of New York City). I decided to apply anyway, figuring that I could worry about having to relocate and everything else if I was even offered the job.
Long story short, I was offered and accepted the job, but I’m still in the process of moving to Philadelphia. I already miss beautiful Jersey City, but I’m excited to start exploring Philadelphia this Spring.
In addition to the new job and moving cities/apartments, I’m also enrolled in two online graphic design classes at Parsons, and will be super busy over the next couple of months.
I hope I’ll be able to write some more for this blog, which has so far survived my Master’s dissertation, moving back in with my parents, working at Forever 21, meeting my boyfriend, moving to Jersey City, getting my first publishing job, moving apartments, and getting my second publishing job. Hopefully it can survive a little longer.
Thanks to everyone who has continued reading through the years. You guys are the best!!!!
