I’d be a Dauntless failure

I recently finished reading Divergent by Veronica Roth, which is the first in a series of young adult dystopian fiction. (I’m still finishing Insurgent, so keep an eye out for a review sometime in the near future.) In the book, citizens of a future Chicago are divided into 5 groups, or factions. The factions are meant to represent one personality trait that the faction founders valued above all the rest. The main character of Divergent is Beatrice “Tris” Prior, originally of the selfless faction, Abnegation, but on Choosing Day, Tris chooses to switch to the Dauntless faction.

The Dauntless faction values courage above all else, and before a new member can join the faction they must undergo a simulation facing all of their fears and find a way to overcome them. The lowest known number of fears is four, while the average is usually way above that.
Some people had fears such as spiders, kidnapping, or drowning. This got me thinking, if I had to join Dauntless and overcome my own fears, what would they be? And how many would I have?

The answer?

  1. Tsunamis
  2. My teeth falling out
  3. Spiders
  4. The big alien from Alien
  5. Ghosts
  6. Losing my friends
  7. People talking about/ laughing at me behind my back
  8. Failing my own expectations

And who knows what else I’m deeply afraid but consciously unaware of. My biggest known fear has definitely got to be spiders, as cliche as that sounds. If they’re anything other than teeny-tiny I won’t even go near them; I’m also afraid of spiders jumping on me.

What about you? If you had to join Dauntless, what fears would you have to overcome? Would you be in the minority, with only a few, or in the Divergentverse majority, with ten? Fifteen? So far, I have eight.

  1. 1. Natural Disasters
    2. Being stabbed… I hate knives
    3. Losing family, especially Zack
    4. Things happening to my house. Being a homeowner is terrifying!
    5. Cockroaches
    6. Never paying off my student loans

This is harder than I thought. I feel like in our society we’d have so much more to be afraid of because we have so much more in life and lots of things to lose: money, technology, posessions, etc.

I have lots of dreams about losing my teeth… also of having uneven legs. Weird.

    1. I’ve never heard of someone dreaming about uneven legs! That’s really interesting. I have a lot of dreams about tsunamis, tornadoes, losing my teeth, and being pulled under by waves.
